In the 1950s men were men.
Our grandfathers fought in wars. When their cars broke down they didn’t call for help, they fixed them with their bare hands. They mowed their own lawns with not but the reward of a cold one. They worked more than they played. They took 3 minutes to shit, shower and shave. They were men.
We’ve been trained as American men to do the bare minimum when it comes to our morning routine. Soap on a rope, aerosol shave cream, and aftershave that stings…
That’s how you know it works.
Sure, historically, American men haven’t been known for pampering themselves. But these are also the men who didn’t see the doctor when their back started giving out, who rubbed glue into cuts and scrapes, who drank their livers into an early death.
When you jerry rig your health and ignore some grooming and cleaning basics you are not proving anything to anyone other than the fact that you don’t respect yourself.
These are new times. It’s more and more acceptable for men to use products that keep them younger and healthier looking, but there is still a great deal of stigma. There are a few products that many men still – for the reason of either being too embarrassed to ring it up at the counter, or just a lack of understanding of what it does – won’t use.
The time has come to break down these walls and save face. In more ways than one.
SAVE FACE – IT’S NOT MANLY TO DAMAGE YOUR SKIN
Let’s face it, face cream is a product that many men avoid.
There’s probably a good reason Brad Pitt, or many of our beloved icons of celebrity for that matter, look the way they do today. Sure, genetics and diet play a pivotal role, but taking care of our skin pays off in huge, noticeable dividends. And today’s movie stars need to use their face for their job the same way our forefathers used their brawn. You train for your trade.
Our bodies are made mostly of water, so it makes sense that replenishing that moisture, especially in our face, will restore a youthful appearance. And short term aside, there are long term benefits as well.
It’s also now possible to augment your body’s natural collagen production. A natural protein, collagen gives the skin its strength and structure. Aging and exposure to the environment can take its toll on our skin’s production of collagen, leading to lines and wrinkles, facial sag and poor skin texture. Collagen-enhancing products can keep you toe to toe with Mr. Pitt. And the first rule of skin care is, well you have to join the club to find out.
CRACK A SMILE – CHAPPED LIPS DON’T DO YOU ANY FAVORS
Do you shy away from lip balm? Many men do.
We have all probably been afflicted with chapped lips a few times in our life. Whether during a snowboarding trip to Utah or a weekend romp in Vegas, dry or cold conditions can wreak havoc on the skin. So that’s the big deal with lip balm? We think we know the issue for men here. Applying lip balm with a stick style applicator makes us look like we’re putting on lipstick. And, ahem, we’re not. Firstly, we should just get over this, but also applying a lip balm with our fingers from a small tin or jar (during a private restroom moment perhaps) is not so bad.
Chapped lips are uncomfortable to have and unattractive to look at. If its cold out, or you have a chronic issue with this… Just suck it up and fix it already. There are plenty of uncolored, unscented, and cooling options out there. Of course, we highly recommend this amazing lip balm.
CHECKED BAGS – ELIMINATE THE BAGS UNDER YOUR EYES
Another grooming product that still has some stigma with men is eye cream.
Look, we get it. It sounds like something you remember your Mom putting on before bed when you were a kid or something. But she had the right idea. Whether its from a late night of drinking, working or… um studying, yea, studying… we all show stress and toxins under our eyes. It’s hard to hide without makeup.
The face says a lot about our health actually. A study in the Journals of Gerontology showed that men with more wrinkles on their face were more likely to have high blood pressure and cardiac problems. And the wrinkles and bags under our eyes can be remedied with a good anti-inflammatory under-eye serum. Organic ingredients like aloe, tea leaves or good old vitamin C can even fill those wrinkle lines in with natural moisture, leaving a smoother appearance after only a few applications.
If only there was one product that had all 3 of those all natural ingredients… Well there is, of course. Check out our goods and kick those bags to the curb.
FROM SCRUFF TO BUFF – BEARD OIL AS A SECRET WEAPON
Gaining popularity probably the fastest of any men’s grooming care product since the advent of Shaving Cream, Beard Oil still has a reputation as a curiosity, a borderline gag gift for your hairy friend. But the benefits are real and quite essential for maintaining a healthy looking beard.
A good beard oil is going to do 3 things in 3 drops:
The first of which is soften and tame the hairs on your face, which tend to grow out uneven, coarse, and often in different directions. After rubbing the oil in with your hands use a comb to spread the oil evenly, and push down any stray hairs that may be sticking out. The more consistently you use beard oil the sooner you, and your mate, will notice a softer ‘stache.
The next benefit from using beard oil is the added moisture for the skin. That long unseen mug resting under the reed ceiling of facial hair, although warm and mostly protected from the elements, will get dry and itchy. You may have noticed some “beard dandruff” flaking on your shirt from your occasional scratching. Gross. And real. The small amount of beard oil that makes contact with your face or even just gets to the bottom of the follicle is enough to keep the skin moisturized while not getting too oily or greasy. That’s why we recommend limiting application to about 3 drops, depending on the length and thickness of the beard. Don’t over do it.
The third benefit you get from beard oil is a nice and subtle scent. Just because you have a beard doesn’t mean you have to smell like the cheetos you had for lunch or that hoppy crafter beer you’re enjoying. There are many beard oils out there with strong scents ranging from camp fires to sandalwood, but don’t forget your beard is directly under your nose. Do you really want to be smelling colognes all day while you try to eat, or drink, or even just concentrate while at work? We recommend a subtly scented oil that will compliment the man while not overpowering your olfactory senses all day.

SMOOTH MOVE – GET A FRESH START WITH AN EXFOLIATING SCRUB
Let’s discuss another product left out of most men’s grooming rituals: The exfoliating scrub.
Heels. Knees. Elbows. Basically all joints can easily suffer from calluses, the hardening and toughening of dried unhealthy skin. This is a common skin problem that comes from repeated irritations and friction, and is often overlooked. Especially by men. We want our women soft, but do we care about what our feet look or feel like?
Well that’s just silly.
It’s time to scrub away that way of thinking, and chisel out the healthy skin we may very well just not know we have underneath. Scrubs are an effective way to exfoliate away the rough, dead skin that piles up on the surface, and reveal something smoother. This also actually allows for new skin cell generation and improved skin health. You’ll notice the benefits right away, but there are also long term benefits of scrubs in regards to the way the treated skin will age over time.
Coffee grounds, especially, are a great all natural exfoliant and have even shown to remove and hold back cellulite, making it a great option for the entire body. Plus it smells great too. And why should your mug have all the fun.
Convinced, but not sure where to start? Let us get you on the right track with one of our subscription packages. They come to your house in manly cardboard boxes, and smell great. No stigma. Just style.
